When a Mandarin word goes missing, do not stop. Use a repair move: ask the other person to repeat or slow down, describe the idea with simple words, or ask for the word. This matters in speaking tasks and in real conversation, where a short pause is fine but silence ends the exchange.
This is the fourth lesson in Mandarin communication foundations. It supports every other skill in the module.
What repair moves can you use?
Keep a short toolkit and say each phrase aloud until it feels natural.
- Repeat: 请再说一遍。 (Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.) Please say it once more.
- Slower: 请说慢一点。 (Qǐng shuō màn yìdiǎn.) Please speak a little slower.
- Meaning: ”……”是什么意思? (”…” shì shénme yìsi?) What does ”…” mean?
- Ask for the word: ”……”用中文怎么说? (”…” yòng Zhōngwén zěnme shuō?) How do you say ”…” in Chinese?
- Describe: 就是……的东西 (jiù shì … de dōngxi, it is the thing that …), or 是一种…… (shì yì zhǒng …, it is a kind of …).
The fifth move is the strongest, because it keeps you speaking Mandarin.
Worked example
The people and the situation are invented. Xiǎohuá wants to say “umbrella” (雨伞, yǔsǎn) but cannot recall the word.
老师 (Lǎoshī): 下雨的时候,你带什么去学校? When it rains, what do you take to school?
小华 (Xiǎohuá): 我带……对不起,我忘了那个词。 I take … sorry, I forgot that word.
Xiǎohuá’s first reply buys time but gives the teacher nothing to help with. A better second try is:
小华: 就是下雨的时候用的东西,可以放在书包里。用中文怎么说? It is the thing you use when it rains, you can put it in your bag. How do you say it in Chinese?
老师: 雨伞。 Umbrella.
小华: 对,雨伞。我带一把雨伞。 Yes, umbrella. I take an umbrella.
She described the word, asked for it, and then reused it in a full sentence. That reuse helps the word stick.
The mistake to watch for
A common slip is to go silent or to switch fully into English.
Mistaken reply: (silence), then “I forgot the word, sorry.”
The exchange stops, and the listener cannot tell what you know.
The correction is to start the repair at once: say 对不起 (duìbuqǐ), then use one of the five moves.
Even the short 用中文怎么说? is enough to keep the exchange alive. Describing the idea with three or four simple words shows more language than one English word.

1. You did not hear the question. Say what you would say in Mandarin.
Show answer
对不起,请再说一遍。 (Duìbuqǐ, qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.) You can add 请说慢一点 if it was too fast.
2. You want to say “fridge” (冰箱, bīngxiāng) but forgot it. Describe it in Mandarin.
Show answer
One possible answer: 就是放在厨房的东西,可以让食物不会坏。 (Jiù shì fàng zài chúfáng de dōngxi, kěyǐ ràng shíwù bú huì huài.) Any simple description that points to the idea works.
3. You hear a word you do not know: 志愿者. Ask what it means.
Show answer
请问,“志愿者”是什么意思? (Qǐngwèn, “zhìyuànzhě” shì shénme yìsi?) It means volunteer.
Where this leads next
Next, test how much of your phrasing you truly understand in telling memorised phrases from understood meaning. The summary selection and paraphrase studio trains the same skill of saying an idea in your own simple words.
Repair phrases stick fastest when you have to use them under mild pressure. A teacher in online one-to-one Chinese tuition can create that pressure gently and give you instant feedback.
